Episode 04| As AI technologies are increasingly adopted by more and more industries, there are concerns about the risk of bias in how they shape and impact important societal decisions. One area in which this can be seen is mortgage lending. As financial institutions and mortgage lenders have increasingly adopted AI technologies to assess applicants, many investigations have found that the algorithms used are biased against Black and Latino applicants. Described as “modern day redlining”, this AI bias perpetuates a long history of racism in access to credit and home ownership in the US.
